The Lanchester Car Company with Fred Lanchester in 1893 when he built his first engine and fitted it to a flat bottomed boat built and designed by his brothers. The boat was was probably the first all British powerboat in 1894.

The 3rd car was started in 1899, when the Lanchester Engine Company was formed. Later Birmingham Lanchester designs, such as the magnificent Forty and straight Eight models in the 1920s were built.

By 1931 Lanchester were in financial trouble and was taken over by BSA Manufacturing finally finished in 1956 with the last car called the Sprite.
