To avoid having to make a car insurance claim, motorists are being encouraged to be cautious with their car keys and not give thieves an easy ride.
The AA has revealed that last year, more than 18,500 cars were stolen after thieves broke into a home and secured the keys to the vehicle.
It is claimed by the cheap car insurance provider that criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their methods which is leading to a 50 per cent rise in the number of cars stolen in this way.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "We believe many such cars are stolen to order and thieves may be waiting for the right opportunity to seize them."
Meanwhile, the AA last week warned motorists to take regular breaks when driving to ensure they do not drift off at the wheel during a long journey.
