ABI: Reduce accidents; reduce car insurance costs

Reducing the number of accidents on the roads is the most effective way to help cut the long-term cost of car insurance, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has stated.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, also addressed the issue of uninsured drivers and claimed that there is no short-term solution to the problem.

However, if insurance premiums can be lowered, this may encourage more people to make sure they are covered and therefore reduce the costs for everyone, he claims.

He said that "it's a bit of a catch 22 situation" as "insurers have to set the premiums to offset the risks".

However, "if we can reduce the accident rate in the long-term we can reduce the cost of insurance", he added.

Young males living in urban areas are those most likely to be caught driving without car insurance, the November edition of Advanced Driving revealed.
