Making sure properties are secure is as important as ever at this time of year, Greater Manchester Police have revealed.

The force has offered its top three tips on how to make homes less appealing to burglars now the long, dark nights are drawing in.

Firstly, Greater Manchester Police are urging people to ensure their burglar alarms are switched on whenever they vacate the property, as this will help to deter thieves.

Furthermore, it is crucial to lock all windows and doors and to leave a light on if the property will be vacant once it has gone dark.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, of Greater Manchester Police's Wigan Division, commented: "Doors and windows should also be locked even when you're in, as thieves are opportunists and it only takes them a few seconds to enter a property and steal items."

He said that it is all too often the case that homeowners are making it easy for thieves to enter their properties.ADNFCR-1789-ID-801213123-ADNFCR
