To avoid making a claim on their car insurance, drivers are being encouraged to take breaks if they are travelling long distances.
Research from the AA has revealed that two-thirds of people fail to follow this advice when going on a trip which may take several hours.
The survey of motorists also found that 23 per cent only ever stop for a quick trip to the toilet, while one in 20 never stop at all.
A further one in ten admit that they have fallen asleep at the wheel and 28 per cent carry on driving when they are tired so that they can reach their destination quicker.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, advised: "If you feel tired, stop, drink a strong coffee and have a 20-minute nap - simply stretching your legs and getting some fresh air isn't sufficient."
The AA has previously welcomed the news that the police are catching more people who drive without car insurance.
