Young drivers may end up having to make a claim on their breakdown insurance as many do not carry out checks on cars they buy, a survey has revealed.
Research from Norwich Union found that 49 per cent of first-time car buyers under the age of 21 do nothing to ensure the safety of their vehicle until it is due its first MOT.
This is worrying as statistics show that motorists are twice as likely to be injured when driving an older car, the insurance firms states.
Nigel Bartram, underwriting strategy manager for Norwich Union, said parents should encourage their children to have a vehicle inspection before purchasing a car "as this ensures you're not going to be hit by a huge repair that is ultimately more expensive than the initial purchase of the car".
The AA advises motorists to make sure lock all windows, doors and sunroofs when parking their cars to help prevent theft.
