According to esure, any bonfires used to dispose of rubbish following a DIY or garden project should be kept firmly under control and supervised at all times.
Having an up-to-date home insurance policy is also crucial as if a bonfire gets out of control and damages a neighbour's property or injures someone, they can make a claim against the homeowner.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said: "It can be easy to bite off more than we can chew when it comes to DIY, so remember to do your homework and make sure you're familiar with the basics before getting your hands dirty."
A survey by Virgin Money Homes Insurance recently revealed that properties in Kensington and Chelsea are some of the safest in the UK.
