Rising fuel prices and reports of continued rain during August could lead to fewer people on the roads during the August bank holiday, new research has shown.
Of the motorists recently polled by the AA, 56 per cent said that they would not travel at all during the upcoming three-day break.
The research showed that the cost of fuel at the pumps is a major factor on whether people will travel over the long weekend, with 23 per cent of those surveyed saying that the price of petrol is the most important factor in their decision whether to hit the road or not.
During last year's bank holiday only 17 per cent of drivers decided to embark on a day trip but the AA said that more than half of motorists will be heading out for just one day rather than a long weekend.
With car insurance premiums on the rise, motorists could take comfort in the AA's August fuel report, which shows that the average price of petrol has fallen by 6.5 per cent in the last month, according to Fleet Directory.
