It seems as though the credit crunch did not stop everyone from spending in the run up to Christmas, new research has revealed.
Data released by Barclaycard has shown that over 11.5 million transactions were processed for its retailer customers on Christmas Eve.
The highest rate of spending came at 12.25pm when 387 card transactions were processed every second for the bank's 93,000 retailers across the country.
Antony Jenkins, chief executive of Barclaycard, said: "We have also seen a significant increase in post-Christmas shopping versus December 2007 as the sales have continued."
Figures also show that this December there was an increase of 4.7 per cent in the number of transactions compared to the same time last year.
According to the APACs regional payments map, 94 per cent of people in the UK hold a plastic card, while 87 per cent have a debit card.
