The Post Office is keen to stress the benefits of cheaper bike insurance as motorists look to reduce costs by opting for two wheels instead of four.
New research suggests that many people see bikes as offering increased fuel efficiency as well as being easier to use in urban areas. Other financial benefits include lower car tax and even free parking in many areas.
In total, the Post Office survey discovered that up to 4.8 million - 13 per cent - of UK drivers are attracted by swapping their car for a motorcycle.
Richard Pennant-Jones, head of general insurance for the Post Office, explained: "Using mopeds or motorcycles over the spring and summer can help reduce day-to-day transport and running costs, including insurance which would be significantly cheaper for motorcycles and mopeds than cars."
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police have announced details of a forthcoming Bike Safe Event designed to help increase bikers' road awareness and encourage safer driving on the road.
