New figures show there has been a decline in the number of bikers killed on UK roads.
The Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) welcomed the news that last year nearly one hundred fewer motorcyclists were killed in road accidents and praised bikers' attempts to improve their driving safety.
According to the official Department of Transport figures, a total of 493 motorcyclists were killed in 2008, the lowest number since 1996, despite motorcycle use increasing by 44 per cent. However, bike insurance customers are warned that the decline in road deaths does not lessen the need for caution when riding.
Sheila Rainger, director of communications and research at the MCI, said: "To see a fall in motorcycle fatalities of almost one hundred in a single year is a massive achievement, and one of which everyone working towards safer motorcycling can be proud."
She added that riders should not be complacent about safety and should continue to ensure they improve their skills by attending special training courses.
Last week, the Post Office revealed that many motorists are attracted to bikes because of lower running costs and affordable bike insurance policies.
