Bikers are being urged to brave the winter weather and stay out on the roads despite the official end of British summertime.
According to the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA), Brits are becoming less daunted by colder weather - 156,000 more riders kept their bike insurance up-to-date and their road tax paid during the winter of 2008-9 than five years previously - resulting in one-third fewer vehicles being taken off the road compared to 2001.
Spokesperson for the group Sheila Rainger said that winter riding brings its own unique challenges - with downsides being cold rain, but upsides including clear mid-day rides.
The MCIA recommends that bikers follow simple safety steps to make the most of the riding experience that winter has to offer.
Wearing warm, bright and easily-seen clothes, checking mirrors regularly and turning lights on before it is fully dark can all help motorcyclists stay safe on the roads, according to the group.
In addition, the group stressed the dangers of riding during the winter months, pointing out that eight per cent of motorbike crashes in 2008 were caused due to slippery roads, while one per cent were the result of vision becoming impaired by rain, sleet, snow or fog.
The body added that cold temperatures can slow mental functions and make it more difficult to complete complex tasks.
Ms Rainger continued: "In the dark mornings ahead, riders and drivers alike need to be more vigilant for everyones safety, and to give each other a little extra consideration.
"Drivers in particular should not be complacent about their driving style and remember that even if they themselves are warm, comfortable and focused, other road users may be finding the conditions more challenging."
Her comments come after both the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) last week called on car insurance customers to remain vigilant on the country's roads following the turning back of UK clocks on October 25th.
Figures released by Rospa show that the most fatalities on UK roads last year were recorded in November.
