New research shows that many holidaymakers are planning to reduce holiday costs this year by driving - rather than flying - to their European destinations.
However, Saga Breakdown Assistance reveals that people many will fail to take out adequate breakdown insurance before setting off and could therefore face large repair bills once they are on the road.
The poll from Saga also discovered that one in five tourists will not check their oil before starting their journey, while once in seven neglect to check their tyre pressure.
It is estimated that the cost of breaking down can be significant, with the cost of a vehicle being recovered from Italy costing £1,935, while motorway recovery to the nearest garage in Germany could cost holidaymakers up to £190.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Services said: "When you add up the cost of calling out assistance and repairing your car, it really does make sense to take out breakdown cover."
The Association of British Insurers stressed that holidaymakers planning to travel abroad should ensure they have the correct travel insurance in place to protect against thefts from their vehicles.
