Having the details of their breakdown insurance provider with them in the car is one of the top tips a website has given to motorists during the winter months.

According to Fool.co.uk, people need to take extra precautions when driving in bad weather conditions and planning their journey well in advance is another important piece of advice.

They should also make sure that their car is properly serviced and that the battery is charged ready for any long trips to visit relatives over Christmas.

The website states: "Obviously, the best way to keep down your car insurance premium is to avoid making claims in the first place."

Checking that the windscreen is clear and that tyres are in good condition people may help to avoid making such claims.

It may be that younger drivers are more likely to make a claim on their breakdown insurance as many first-time buyers under the age of 21 do not check their car until it has its first MOT, Norwich Union found.
