Britons are shunning traditional white weddings in favour of holiday ceremonies, it has been suggested.
Peter Straddon, a spokesman for the British Insurance Brokers Association, claimed that the unreliability of British weather, combined with the cost of UK weddings, was driving couples abroad.
"What with low cost airlines offering great deals for superb locations, there is an increase in overseas weddings," he commented.
A recent joint study by First Choice Travel and Holiday Hypermarket revealed that couples opting for an overseas wedding paid just £520, while those getting married in the UK parted with an average of £11,000.
Furthermore, 80 per cent of couples said that a Caribbean wedding would be less stressful to organise than a traditional white wedding in the UK.
According to Virgin Holidays, some ideal destinations for Caribbean weddings include Barbados, Grenada and St Lucua.
