Brits should ensure their home insurance is up-to-date and fully protects their property while the wintery weather sweeps across the UK, it has been claimed.

According to Halifax, the typical home insurance claim for storm damage is around £1,000, while flood damage can cost up to £20,000.

Therefore, people are advised to take precautions as the insurer claims that the country is experiencing some "of the worst snowy and icy conditions for decades".

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax, said that "winter storms, heavy rain and more snow pose a considerable threat to many homes in England and Wales, particularly in southern regions".

In case of an emergency, property owners are advised to keep their home insurance documents close at hand.

The Association of British Insurers recently encouraged people to check snow damage is covered under the storm provision within home insurance policies.
