While the credit crunch bites and many Brits could be taking out loans to pay for things such as travel insurance, some have other ideas for saving themselves money.
According to a survey from Egg.com, 23 per cent of people have now turned part of their garden into a vegetable patch to cut the costs of their grocery shopping.
A further one in 25 has decided to raise chickens while 36 per cent are switching from bottled to tap water.
Patrick Muir, a spokesperson at Egg.com, said: "It's interesting to see that people across the country are going back to basics and adopting imaginative do-it-yourself savings techniques.
"Simple habits and a simple life are replacing luxuries, and a can do attitude is coming to the fore," he added.
Meanwhile, research carried out for the Co-operative Child Trust Funds revealed that many Brits are now educating their children about the credit crunch.
