Brits cautious about reducing car insurance cover

Many drivers are shopping around for the best car insurance deals without reducing their cover, claims new research.

A survey from Datamonitor revealed that just five per cent of motorists would consider opting for third-party cover to help make their premium's more affordable. A further 12 per cent confirmed they would look at increasing their policy excess or reducing the amount of cover in order to save money.

Yet 44 per cent of drivers explained that shopping around would ensure they would get the best price for the cover they require.

Liz Hartley, Datamonitor principal consultant for financial services, said: "This is reflective of the open and competitive insurance market that exists in the UK generally.

"It is a buyers' market and, as such, consumers do not believe that they need to compromise when negotiating their insurance policies; indeed, there is almost an expectation of 'more for less' each year."

Last month, the AA concluded that drivers are currently opting to buy a new vehicle out necessity rather than choice because of financial pressures.
