Holidaymakers are being advised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to make sure they have purchased the correct travel insurance before jetting off abroad.
It is thought that around 11 million Britons will go on holiday to warmer climes this winter and although they may be tempted by low-cost flights and deals, the FCO is warning that without getting adequate cover, they could end up paying more than they bargained for.
Jess Prasad, from the FCO's Know Before You Go campaign, said: "Taking out comprehensive travel insurance and taking some simple steps to minimise costs could significantly reduce the risk of having an exceptionally expensive Christmas break."
A survey conducted by the organisation recently found that one in five people think they can borrow money from the British Embassy if they get into difficulties while away.
Last week, those going on extreme or adventure sports holidays were warned by esure that travel insurance is even more vital due to the nature of their vacation.
