Many people in the UK are risking having to make a claim on their home insurance by leaving presents under the tree in view of any thieves, it has been found.
A survey conducted by Marks and Spencer (M&S) found that 39 per cent of homeowners put gifts out before the big day.
There are around seven per cent of Brits who are more safety conscious and hold back on displaying their gifts until Christmas Eve.
Judith Roberts, M&S Money insurance manager, said: "By making sure you have adequate home insurance you can enjoy festivities in the knowledge that the contents of your home are protected should the worst happen."
M&S also found that while 75 per cent of households have home contents insurance, only nine per cent of these policies offer unlimited cover for possessions.
Research by Abbey recently found that millions of people in the UK are now storing around £5.4 billion worth of money in their homes.
