Brits 'take home insurance risk' with extended trips away

Many Brits may risk having to make a claim on their home insurance by leaving their house for warmer climes for an extended period this year.

Sainsbury's home insurance has discovered that 4.79 million people are planning to spend more than a month away from home at some point over the next 12 months.

As a result, Sainsbury's has encouraged people to check the details of their home insurance policies carefully as many only cover a family home for up to 30 days if it is unoccupied.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said: "Anyone who is considering taking an extended trip away from home, therefore leaving it unoccupied, needs to inform their home insurance provider and check that they are still covered by their policy while they are away."

Last week, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents advised people that they could save money on their home insurance by using fire alarms which are wired up to the mains.
