In an effort to try and save money during the credit crunch some people are lying to providers in an effort to cut the cost of their car insurance premiums.
As a result, honest motor insurance customers are having to foot the bill at a cost of £50 to £60 per policy, according to Norwich Union.
The company also highlights that anyone who is caught declaring false information in an attempt to save money may find that their car insurance then becomes invalid and they have to pay more in the long run.
Simon Warsop, director of motor pricing at Norwich Union, said the firm has systems to identify "policies that are bought using fabricated data" and said that it is "essential that customers have supplied accurate information to ensure they have adequate cover in the event that they need to make a claim".
It was recently revealed by Mintel that car insurance is the most popular product searched for on price comparison websites.
