Britons are being urged to take travellers cheques on holiday with them this summer and leave their cash at home.
A recent study by American Express revealed that one-in-six Brits had their cash or possessions stolen while on holiday last year.
Kristie Bayley, a spokeswoman for American Express, said that a theft can ruin a holiday and pointed out that unlike cash, travellers cheques can easily be replaced.
"The last thing people want when they are on holiday is to worry about the safety of their money and belongings. This summer we are encouraging holiday makers to include Travellers Cheques within their travel wallet," she commented.
Other tips for staying safe abroad include photocopying any important documents, buying travel insurance and using a hotel safe.
The Independent reported last year that Spain tops the list of European holiday crime hot-spots, with France coming second.
A poll by Swiftcover revealed that over one-third of holiday thefts take place in Spain.
