Burglaries in the UK 'on the increase'

Burglaries in the UK are expected to rise, meaning it could be more important than ever to ensure that properties are protected with adequate home insurance.

According to Abbey, the declining economic situation may lead to an increase in domestic burglaries as during the UK's last recession, break-in figures increased by 33.8 per cent.

Thierry Campet, sales and marketing director at Abbey Insurance, said: "The admission that crime is likely to rise as a result of the deteriorating economic climate should stand as a warning to us all to ensure we keep ourselves protected."

He also added that many people "wrongly" believe home insurance is something they can cut back on.

Home secretary Jacqui Smith has also warned that crime rates are likely to increase with the recession.

Earlier this month, Norwich and Peterborough claimed that it is a good idea for homeowners to ensure they have insurance to protect their property in case any accidents occur over Christmas.
