Burglary fears 'not encouraging people to take out home insurance'

Despite increasing fears about burglary many people still risk having to make a claim on their contents insurance by not taking security measures.

Research conducted by Halifax revealed that one in five people never give thought to their valuables and whether or not they can be easily seen from windows.

A further 22 per cent admitted that they do not keep windows and doors locked when they are at home, while 17 per cent have not taken out home contents insurance should the worst happen.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said people are effectively "advertising their valuables" by leaving them in full view and "the fact that many are leaving windows and doors unlocked means it can be all too tempting for burglars to reach in and grab whatever they can".

The Association of British Insurers recently stated that compared to five years ago, insurance providers are now much better able to detect cases of insurance fraud.
