Burst pipes 'highlight need for home insurance'

The need for home insurance has been highlighted recently after it was revealed that Brits have lodged more than £15 million in claims following burst water pipes.

The figures, released by the AA, come as a result of the recent icy weather which has frozen water in pipes, causing them to burst and flood people's homes.

Escape of water is the biggest cause of home insurance claims, accounting for around one in five every year.

This peaks in the winter when pipes start to freeze, especially those supplying outdoor taps and plumbing in basements, lofts and exterior walls.

Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, said: "As well as dealing with an insurance claim, you face the major hassle of drying out and repairing your home."

Last week, Britons were urged by the Association of British Insurers not to automatically choose the cheapest home insurance, but the one which will be most beneficial to them, should they need to make a claim.
