Car and home insurance 'can provide protection in the snow'

Motorists are being advised to contact their home insurance or car insurance providers to check what cover their policy will provide them with during the current spate of bad weather.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) suggests that homeowners check whether snow damage is covered under the storm provision within building insurance policies.

Motorists, meanwhile, should be aware than most accidents caused by snow or ice are covered under comprehensive car insurance policies.

However, it is unlikely that the cost of breakdowns or vehicles which fail to start will be covered, the organisation warned.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, said: "People who have suffered flight delays or damage to their home or vehicle due to the weather should contact their insurance company for advice."

It was not only motorists affected by the snow yesterday, as many public transport links were also disrupted and London bus services were suspended.
