Taking out car insurance could be a good idea as criminals are getting smarter with they ways they are breaking into vehicles, it has been claimed.
The AA has been warned by police forces that instead of going for old bangers which can be easily broken into, thieves are targeting more high-end models.
Despite the fact that modern cars have sophisticated security alarms and immobilisers, criminals are not deterred and are now stealing keys to break into them.
Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "Last year 15,700 cars were stolen after keys were taken in a burglary and 2,900 cars stolen after keys taken in muggings, pick pockets or car jacking."
He advises car owners to "treat their car keys like cash".
British Insurance Brokers Association has suggested that many people are cutting back on products such as car insurance to save money in the recession.
