Car insurance customers are being warned about vehicle matching scams which are troubling motorists across the UK.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has revealed that the criminal schemes are costing consumers nearly £3 million every year.
Car matching scams work by approaching people looking to sell their vehicle and offering to match them up with a buyer, with a fee paid up-front for the service.
However, a buyer often does not exist and the money is lost.
Motor trade lead officer Peter Stratton from the Trading Standards Institute, said: "High pressure selling alongside cold calling makes this a very successful scam, often leaving the consumer with very little chance of obtaining redress."
As the AA reveals that thieves are coming up with increasingly more ingenious ways of breaking into high-end vehicles, taking out Car insurance may be one way to help protect motors.
