Drivers who have shopped around for the best car insurance cover should not cut further costs by failing to look after their vehicle, claims one firm.
Research by Kwik-Fit has revealed that around seven million drivers are planning to reduce their expenditure on service costs in order to lower their car running costs.
However, there are concerns that this approach could actually lead to higher bills as small faults could develop into larger and possibly terminal problems.
The research also discovered that some motorists put looks before mechanics and 1.5 million drivers are planning to spend £80 over the next 12 months on valeting their cars.
David White, customer services director, at Kwik-Fit, said: "It is great that so many motorists take pride in the appearance of their car, but if money's tight they would probably be wise to wash the car themselves and put the money towards a service."
Last month, the AA stressed that many younger drivers could reduce their chances of being involved in a road accident by simply ensuring they concentrate while behind the wheel.
