The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is stressing that motorists should not retaliate if they are the victims of tailgating.
A recent survey by car insurance provider AA revealed that many drivers believe driving too close to the car in front is the most annoying habit displayed by fellow motorists and can lead to claims on car insurance policies.
However, a spokesman for the IAM stressed that drivers should react to tailgating by attempting to move away rather than slowing down or breaking sharply.
The spokesman said: "It is best to always try to leave a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front.
"And if you are being tailgated, find the earliest opportunity to change lanes in safety and allow the tailgater to get past you."
Recent figures from Sainsbury's Finance revealed that two out of three drivers have admitted to driving dangerously on UK roads even though such behaviour means they could be risking their car insurance no-claims bonuses.
