A man had to payout £17,000 after informing his insurer of a false address in an attempt to obtain cheaper car insurance.
According to Norwich Union, the man, who was living with his girlfriend in London, claimed his home address was that of his mother in Essex, even though his vehicle was registered at the home in the capital.
When he was then involved in an accident his insurance company was not notified until they were contacted by the third party's cover providers to confirm liability.
It was upon calling firstly the man's mother and then girlfriend that Norwich Union discovered his deception and the plan to avoid paying the higher car insurance costs that come with living in London.
The third party successfully claimed against the man at a cost of £17,000.
Anyone living in London may also find that their car insurance is more expensive as many people in the city own cars with bigger engines, Experian recently discovered.
