Car insurance news: Most expensive accidents occur in Germany and France

New research has revealed that having a motorway accident in Germany or France is likely to result in an expensive bill.

Aviva revealed that the average bill for a crash in Germany totals £2,490. This is 50 per cent higher than elsewhere in Europe.

Motorists should also be aware that being involved in an incident with a French driver could also lead to a high car insurance claim due to the average personal injury claim standing at £9,510.

Holidaymakers planning to drive on the continent this summer also need to check they have the appropriate European car insurance cover before leaving the UK.

Nigel Bartram, Aviva's UK insurance motor underwriting manager, explained: "You may have to pay for any claims for damage to your car, whether it's your fault or not. Not to mention the hassle of arranging repair and sorting out the claim in the local language."

Last week, a survey from Datamonitor revealed that UK motorists are shopping around for the best car insurance deals rather than opting to reduce their cover to keep premiums down.
