Car insurance premiums could be reduced by extra security, claims AA

The AA believes that many drivers could reduce their car insurance premiums by taking a few extra security measures.

Ian Crowder, spokesperson for the AA, explained that making a car secure at night by parking it in a garage rather than on the driveway so that it is less tempting to car thieves, could help make policies cheaper.

"You can get a reasonable discount for locking your car away at night. If you do get that discount, make sure you do, do it," explained Mr Crowder.

He added that some car insurance providers also offer discounts if cars are fitted with a tracker device that can help improve the chances of the vehicle being recovered.

Recent research from car insurance provider LV= discovered that many thieves are focusing their activity on high-end models, with the average age of a stolen car falling from ten years old to eight years.

The study also concluded that cars in London, Manchester and Cardiff are the most likely to be stolen.
