Car insurance vital for holidaying parents, claims Post Office

The Post Office is stressing that parents should ensure that expensive in-car entertainment designed to keep children happy on long journeys needs to be covered by car insurance policies.

Research conducted by the company suggests that parents could spend around £800 this summer on in-car equipment such as DVD players and iPods in order to keep their offspring happy while travelling to their holiday destination. However, such items can lead to interest from thieves, especially when they are left on display in an unattended vehicle.

Richard Pennant-Jones, Post Office's head of insurance, explained: "We are urging parents to keep their belongings safe this summer and out of sight from opportunistic thieves. This includes even short periods of time such as stops at service stations."

He added that motorists should also be aware that leaving windows open could invalidate car insurance cover.

Meanwhile, a study by Continental Tyres suggests that motorists lose their concentration a third of the time that they are actually driving, highlighting that many drivers could be risking their car insurance no-claims bonuses.
