A new £1.5 million media campaign is hoping to raise awareness that enjoying a drink in the summer sunshine could be putting lives in danger and lead to a criminal conviction.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick urged drivers to make sure they get a taxi or make use of public transport rather than risk getting behind the wheel otherwise they could end up dealing with expensive consequences. "With warm weather and long summer evenings motorists might end up drinking when they hadn't planned to, but that doesn't mean we have to drive home," explained the minister.
He added that convicted drink drivers could face a minimum 12-month driving ban as well as a substantial fine and a criminal record - all factors that could push up car insurance costs once the ban has been lifted.
According to the Department for Transport, a total of 670 people between June and September 2006 were killed or seriously injured as a result of crashes involving drink drivers.
Comma, a car care specialist, recently launched a new national roadshow scheme to help encourage motorists to take better care of their vehicle and hopefully reduce car insurance claims and accidents.
