British motorists are being urged to check their car insurance policies before driving abroad.
A recent poll by Sainsbury's revealed that 17 per cent of Britons are planning to take their cars abroad this summer.
However, AA spokesman Ian Crowder is urging people to check their car insurance before travelling, pointing out that many people are under the misconception that they have the same level of cover abroad as they do in the UK.
"You have an insurance policy in any EC country [and] that policy will be valid at the minimum legal level in other countries that you might be visiting within the EC.
"If you have comprehensive insurance in the UK it will give you third party cover in other countries," he explained.
Mr Crowder added drivers failing to check their car insurance policies could be faced with hefty repair bills.
The British Insurance Brokers Association recommends that drivers extend their cover when abroad and enjoy complete peace of mind.
