Check water pipes 'to avoid home insurance claims'

People may want to check that their home insurance is up to date to avoid some unexpected costs as the cold weather continues in the UK.

Lloyds TSB has reported that there has been a 15 per cent increase in the number of burst pipe claims and the insurer expects this figure to rise as the winter continues.

Without adequate home insurance, burst pipes can be an expensive business, with the average claims being £1,400.

Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance, said many people are unprepared because of last year's mild winter.

"To give yourself peace of mind, make sure you have adequate insurance which will cover you if the icy conditions take their toll on your home," he added.

Legal and General recently advised people to ensure that they carry out essential repair work on their property when it is required as this could mean they avoid having to make a claim on their home insurance.
