Home insurance customers who live in urban areas often do not feel safe walking around the countryside at night, it has been revealed.
A new survey conducted by Halifax discovered that 47 per cent of city residents think walking though the streets at night is safer than walking along a deserted country lane.
In comparison, 67 per cent of people dwelling in more rural locations would feel more at risk walking through a built-up area when it is dark.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home insurance, said: "Depending on one's home surroundings, the perceptions of what is safer in regards to city versus country living differ considerably"
He said wherever a person lives, they must still take steps to protect themselves "in and about their home".
Research by Direct Line recently discovered that more than one-fifth of women in the UK have had their handbag stolen.
