Collectors urged to review contents insurance

Home art collections could be worth more than many people think, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The insurer has warned that treasures such as antiques, art and comic collections should be protected against future loss or damage.

Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said that although collections are often 'irreplaceable' most people would want to recover any financial loss if they were to be stolen.

"We'd recommend anyone who has a potentially valuable collection to get it valued by an expert regularly and ensure they obtain a dated copy of the valuation certificate," he said.

Under certain contents insurance policies, if a house's contents are insured for a lower amount than they are actually worth, it means that the value of a future claim is reduced.

Therefore Halifax advice people to make sure their insurer knows just how much their collections are worth.

Meanwhile a new report from Liverpool Victoria has revealed the university towns in which student's possessions are most at risk.

Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham were top of the list while the three safest were Lancaster, Durham and St Andrews.
