Contents insurance 'could help protect £44,500 worth of possessions'

Taking out contents insurance could prove to be a useful move for many people as it has been discovered that the cost of replacing the contents of the average UK home is £44,500.

Whether the contents are stolen or damaged as a result of a flood or fire, a suitable policy could help to replace the items, Sainsbury's explains.

The living room was found to be the most expensive room to cover, as the average value of sofas, coffee tables, TVs and ornaments which can be found in such a room total £10,000.

Second most expensive was the master bedroom (£5,900), while the kitchen came in third, valued at £5,400.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "It's staggering when you tot up all the contents in your home, just how much it would cost to replace them all should the unthinkable happen."

Meanwhile, Tesco has just announced that it is offering people a 45 per cent discount on Home Insurance for a year if they take out a policy.
