Direct Line: Heavy penalties needed to promote responsible driving

Insurer Direct Line has welcomed new policies from the police which aim to tackle the problem of drink and drug driving in the UK.

This could be good news for those with car insurance as they may find their policies are cheaper with fewer drink-related accidents occurring on the roads.

Drivers who excessively break the speed limit will also be penalised under the new rules and Direct Line claims that this is a good thing as their research found that around 80 per cent of motorists said they drive too fast on urban roads.

Frances Browning, a spokesperson for the company, said: "We believe that heavy penalties are needed to deter speeding on our roads and promote responsible driving among UK motorists."

According to the Association of British Insurers, more than ever is now being done to clamp down on uninsured drivers in the UK.
