New research has found that one in ten homes in the UK have been burgled or targeted by thieves in the past five years.

According to Direct Line, this equates to around 2.4 million homes. Residents of London were worst hit while Wales and the south-west of the country were the safest, only having six per cent of thefts.

However, it was found that despite Londoner having the most burglaries, they were least likely to take precautions or pay extra attention to the safety of their home.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, said: "A few security improvements may prevent you from becoming a victim of burglary and keep your possessions safe."

People looking to increase the value of their property may want to consider building an extension by adding an en-suite or dividing one large bedroom into two smaller spaces.
