People should never think of travel insurance as an "add-on" or optional extra, an industry analyst has asserted.
A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that consumers should view travel insurance as being an intrinsic element of the holiday-planning process.
He described taking a holiday without cover as an "unnecessary" risk.
"It is not something that can be regarded as an add-on or a luxury. It should be something that is regarded as a central, integral part of planning any trip overseas," he added.
The ABI representative concluded by noting that not taking out travel insurance is "false economy" and could almost be deemed as acting in a reckless manner.
He made his comments after Lloyds TSB published data earlier this month which suggested that one in ten - or 5.2 million - people have gone on holiday in the past without taking out a travel insurance policy.
