Motorists convicted of drink driving will see their insurance premiums increase significantly, according to one financial organisation.
Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for Norwich Union, said that the "safest option" was for drivers to refrain from drinking any alcohol at all and urged motorists who do consume alcohol to use taxis and public transport.
Figures released by the AA earlier this month revealed that the average insurance premium increased by around six per cent over the last year.
"As a reminder, if a motorist fails to declare their convictions they risk their motor insurance policy becoming void in the event of a claim. Honesty is always the best policy," he commented.
Research carried out by Brake last year found that almost 20 per cent of motorists aged 17 to 18 had driven whilst over the limit, while seven percent admitted to going behind the wheel under the influence of drugs.
