It is better to re-train young drivers than prosecute them if they commit a driving offence, in the opinion of one industry expert.
The AA claims that the Drive Smart scheme, which could help to reduce the cost of car insurance policies for those who have been caught speeding, helps motorists to improve their skills.
This is better than simply giving them three points on their licence and sending them back out on to the roads, the firm continues.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, said that "careless driving courses are a good way of getting people back on the straight and narrow".
"Perhaps something which is geared more towards improving the skills of a young driver would be another tool [to improve their driving]," he added.
According to figures released by Transport for London, drivers aged between 17 and 21 were involved in 555 collisions in London which resulted in death or serious injury in 2007.
