Drivers who still have a no claims bonus on their insurance policies have been given advice by RIAS on how to make sure they keep it.
The bonus is beneficial because it can knock as much as 75 per cent off the cost of an annual premium and is seen as being a reward for drivers who have not made claims on their policies.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "It takes five years to accumulate the maximum no claims bonus and can be lost as well as gained."
RIAS advises people to avoid accidents by driving carefully and making sure cars are serviced regularly.
The insurance company also reminds drivers that a little extra can occasionally be paid to protect bonuses, as long as two claims are not made in quick succession.
Last week it was reported that there can often be an increase in the number of car insurance claims made over the winter as driving conditions worsen.
