With the credit crunch and rising costs to contend with, it seems that Brits are snubbing foreign holidays in favour of domestic breaks and road trips.
Research carried out by the AA this week revealed that 46 per cent of Britons are planning to take at least one holiday in the UK this year, with many people planning to use their cars in an effort to "cut costs and avoid travel stress".
Mark Huggins, head of AA personal loans, said: "Our survey shows people are being smart with their money when booking holidays this summer. People are also thinking carefully about buying smaller cars to save money but it is important to make sure the car you choose is suitable for going on long holiday journeys, with enough room for all your passengers and luggage."
Mr Huggins pointed out that a third of drivers use a personal loan to buy their cars and added that it is important to shop around and get the "best deal" possible on car finance.
In order to stay safe on holiday, Mr Huggins recommended that drivers give their cars a thorough check before leaving and ensure that tyre pressure is at the correct level.
Meanwhile, the AA has also advised drivers to check their car insurance policies before driving abroad as cover can often vary from country to country.
