Brits under the influence of alcohol have caused nearly £700 million in damage to their homes through fires, floods, leaving doors open to would-be thieves and carelessly smashing valuable items, according to new research.
Over 1.5 million homes have been affected, according to research carried out by More Than. The most common cause of damage is breaking of valuable belongings with 3.3 million incidents. Although there have also been 2.2 million incidents of keys left in doors and 1.1 million occurrences of fires due to people falling asleep mid-cooking. Unsurprisingly, pizza is the worst offender. Eighty-three per cent of respondents admit to drinking in their home, which is unsurprising, but 61 per cent say that they are regularly drunk. Worryingly for friends of big drinkers is that a quarter of incidents occurred in other people's houses. "The dangers of drink driving are well documented, but the perils of being drunk in the home are not," says Matt Pernet from More Than Home Insurance. "Yet, as this research shows, the home can be a highly precarious place for somebody with impaired judgement." If you do enjoy a tipple too many from time to time, it be a good idea to see exactly what your home insurance plan covers. |
