EST urges consumers to make energy savings

With the cost of fuel spiralling out of control, homeowners are being urged to conserve energy where possible.

The Energy Savings Trust (EST) has predicted that Britons could save as much as £700 million annually by using more efficient electrical appliances.

EST PR assistant Caroline Rams suggested that consumers look for the EST's efficiency logo when purchasing new appliances.

The logo – which can be found on everything from light bulbs to washing machines – guarantees consumers that the appliances will help to reduced carbon emissions and cost less to run.

"Replacing an old, energy inefficient fridge-freezer with a new energy saving recommended one could save you up to £34 every year," Ms Rams added.

According to EST figures, around £1 billion worth of energy is wasted annually by householders leaving electrical appliances – such as computers and television sets - on standby.

Other ways to save money include using a price comparison site to search for cheap home insurance and car insurance quotes.
